ROCK LEE VS GAARA

Based on the show "Naruto". This was for my first semester VFX Final, which I had full creativity over as long as I followed the criteria of including:

Rotoscoping

Matchmoving/Stabilization

Color grading

Element compositing

Keying

I thought it would be fun to recreate one of my favorite scenes from my childhood TV show.

uhhhh dont mind the censor uhhh. Tight suit am I right.

The first step was filming the footage. Before doing so I had to make the costumes. I got a green suit, cut up an old orange t-shirt and red pants, and used a permanent marker and tape for the green outfit. I made the sand gourd out of cardboard and paper mache and the outfit with clothes I had laying around. The gourd was eventually scrapped as the end result looked better as CG.

First I tackled all of the modeling all in Maya, I made the general landscape of the village, the wall, a dozen buildings, and the interior room and statue. After some time however, I realized that many of the buildings I created were not "realistic" enough so I decided to use models from Sketchfab instead to set dress my scene. I built everything in Unreal Engine and used assets from Quixel Bridge to build my environment.

After editing the raw footage in Nuke, I brought in the footage into Unreal as cards to render with the environment.

The weights-dropping scene was created using a CG version that I modeled and rigged and then comped into the environment with animation. After rendering everything, I added effects, graded the color, and polished it in Nuke.
