I also took the footage and hand tracked the footage in Maya by placing a sphere wherever the flames would be emitting. I then took these objects into ember gen where I simulated the fire and then composited it back into the nuke scene.

This project was part of my second semester VFX Final which was actually a group project with 3 other people. We decided to do Avatar element bending which each of us did a different element to recreate the intro.

I decided to use mainly Nuke for this project and make a 2.5D environment, and I also wanted to experiment with EmberGen to composite in the flames.

I had to get footage of me "Firebending". It looks very silly without the effects.

First step was to make a mask of the subject. This was done using a combination of  MODNet and AE Rotobrush taking the best of both, then cleaned up with a roto.

The environment was built all inside

nuke using simple primitives and projecting textures onto them.

Here is the final project with all of my teammates clips added!
